Living with the extremes
Four people describe living somewhere with an extreme climate
Siri
I came to this town, three hundred kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, on a one-year contract at the hospital. That was eleven years ago. People always assume the dark months must be unbearable. They’re not easy, but you adapt: you go skiing under the street lights and spend a lot of time in friends’ kitchens. Some colleagues bought special lamps that imitate daylight, but I never bothered. What nobody warns you about is the summer, when the sun simply doesn’t set for two months. Every year, even now, I sleep badly and feel strangely restless, as though my body has forgotten when the day ends. My favourite day is in late January, when the sun appears over the mountains for the first time in weeks and the whole town gathers to watch it, with coffee and special yellow cakes.
