Several universities now record every lecture and post the videos online for students to watch later. Some instructors like this because students can review difficult material at their own pace. Others worry that attendance drops when recordings are available and that students who stay at home miss out on class discussion. What do you think? Should universities record all lectures and make them available to students? Why or why not?
Yes, definitely. Many students have jobs or family responsibilities, and sometimes they simply can't get to class. Recordings also help students whose first language is not English, because they can pause and replay the parts they didn't understand the first time. I don't see why a university would want to make learning harder.
I see the benefits, but I think recordings change how students behave. When I know a lecture will be online, I'm tempted to skip it and tell myself I'll watch it later, and often I never do. Being in the room also means you can ask questions and hear what other students ask.
